The president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, wanted to gain back some supporters that he had been losing, so he decided to start giving people more freedoms. The introduction to democratic ideals lead to an increase in nationalism of places that were non-Russian and they decided that they wanted their independence. in 1991, 14 non- Russian republics declared independence. People in Russia wanted to gain a democratic government and this lead to Gorbachev to resign as president. All leading to the break of the Communist block and the end of the cold war in the near future.
Explain the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and why this symbolized the end of the cold war. In 1989, East Germany was opened up and the Berlin Wall was no longer illegal to cross. Berliners destroyed the wall as guards stood and watched. in 1990, Berlin held its first free election. The destruction of the wall represents the ending of the cold war due to the fact that the large structure was literally and physically separating the two different ideals. its destruction allowed the two side to interact, unite and become one again.willy Brandt, a Berliner stated "Now what belongs together will grow together." His statement shows that Berlin should have never been separated and now that it is united it can now grow together. in 1992, George Bush and Russian President, Boris Yeltsin decided to end the cold war once and for all.

The end of the cold war left the United states as the lone superpower of the world since before the cold war, the Soviet Union and America were the two superpowers and the Soviet Union had just fallen. Leaving America to be the only world superpower with the strongest economy and military. The weakness of the Soviet had left America as undefeatable.
